In the board game Space Hulk, doomed space marines are beamed onto derelict craft in oversized power armor and then hunted by aliens through corridors they can barely turn around in. Overall only fourteen 90%+ titles were released this year, a definite lowmark as the last-gen consoles take their final breaths.Though frequently balanced by a tongue-in-cheek sense of the absurd, the various adaptations of Warhammer 40,000 that followed delighted in its grimness. Of those eleven, only THREE were all-new titles and not remakes/updates/remasters/ports. It won’t be until 2015 that the new-gen fully takes over, as the last-gen is truly on it’s last legs.Ģ014 saw only 11 console titles, for the second straight year in a row, scoring over 90% (via metacritic). Sadly, this was another transition year for the industry in 2014, as we weaned ourselves only partially off the last-gen (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP) & into the next-gen (PS4, Xbox One, 3DS, PS Vita). Indie Games truly competed with the big boys this year, whereas iOS/Android/Mobile and PC/Mac/Linux also made impressive showings. Runners up are Dark Souls II & Bayonetta 2.

It wasn’t a close call, because nearly all of the best-rated games this year were remakes or updates, such as Grand Theft Auto V next-gen & The Last of Us: Remastered, making “Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has come out on top as the single GREATEST GAME OF 2014!
